Wexford Local Development (WLD) through the LEADER programme 2007-2013 have played a key role in the development of The Rug Hub – a niche rural business operating in North Wexford.
Owned and managed by Beryl Power, the Rug Hub was established in the autumn of 2007 and is currently operating from converted stables on her farm near Camolin in North Wexford.
The Rug Hub offers a professional laundry and repair service to the equestrian industry throughout Ireland. It washes, disinfects and repairs all types of horse rugs and associated items and offers a collection and delivery service to customers. Washing and repairing horse rugs is a specialised niche service with an increasing market and is unique to the region. The business has progressively developed since its inception, and is now acknowledged in the industry as an efficient and effective service provider and market leader in this niche market.
LEADER funding through WLD enabled the promoter to invest in a number of areas that have helped to grow the business significantly. Specifically the purchase of three industrial washing machines has allowed them to take in larger volumes of rugs, industrial sewing machines have helped increase output of repair work, while labelling systems and promotional material have all served to enhance their image as a professional service provider.
The passion of the owner coupled with her business acumen and knowledge of the equine industry indicate that this will be a viable and successful commercial business in to the future. Now in its seventh year of trading, Beryl Power has diligently and progressively built a successful business, fulfilling her dream to become Ireland’s number 1 operator for horse rug wash and repairs.
The customer base is extremely varied, and services all sectors of the equine industry to include: Private horse owners, Livery Yards, Stud Farms, Horse Trainers and Show-jumping Yards.
The Rug Hub is an excellent example of how LEADER funding can be used to best effect in a rural area.
