Dementia Group 01

Wexford Local Development hosted this workshop in Enniscorthy on December 20th, attended by 16 individuals and facilitated by The Irish Hospice Foundation. It was the third occasion this year that WLD provided this workshop for participants on its healthcare courses.

The workshop gives individuals an opportunity to improve their confidence and competence when communicating with people with dementia. Therefore it is ideally suitable for those working in a healthcare setting, or for those coming into contact with people with dementia.

Recent reports show that approximately 55,000 people in Ireland currently experience dementia.  As a result, Wexford Local Development was keen to offer this workshop to clients of its healthcare modules.

The training was delivered by Bryan Nolan, Trainer with The Irish Hospice Foundation, and funded by Wexford Local Development under The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2015 – 17.

As working in partnership with local employers is an important aspect of the work of WLD under SICAP, we were delighted to welcome to the workshop staff from both Valentia Nursing Home, Camolin and Knockeen Nursing Home, Wexford, who have provided work placements for WLD healthcare students in the past.

Participants found the training to be “extremely positive” and felt it provided “so much information about the ways of dealing with and caring for an individual with dementia”.
