Wexford Local Development delivers a range of locally based non-formal educational and developmental opportunities to young people across Co. Wexford, targeting areas that have traditionally lacked access to opportunities. One such Local Learning Partnership Initiative this summer had 4 partners, Wexford Local Development, Cois Barry Community House ( Rosslare ), Yola Hedge School and Family Centre ( Tagoat ) and MediasKool ( A young Tech Start Up from Gorey School of Art ).

A room in the Cois Barry Community Centre was converted in to a Radio Studio, and for a week in July and 13 young people aged from 10 to 15 years learned how to devise and produce their own programme. The week culminated in a live broadcast which was seen and heard by parents and neighbours in the local estate. It was a hand’s on experience where new skills were acquired, new possibilities explored and confidence built in a fun and enjoyable way and strongly rooted in the local community.

“ Rather than just being passive consumers of mainstream social media we were promoting the idea that young people could produce digital media content themselves and tell their own stories “ said WLD’s Fran Ryan who led out on organising the initiative.

“ Not all children thrive academically in the classroom but their grasp of digital technology, if fostered, offer endless possibilities for success in their future lives “ he added.

“ When I saw my shy little girl sitting at the microphone conducting an interview like she was on radio every day of the week I couldn’t believe it !……….brilliant, absolutely brilliant “ said one very proud mother.
