Who we work with

The programmes and services of Wexford Local Development fall into two major categories – Social Inclusion programmes and Rural Development programmes. These programmes are delivered using an integrated area-based approach across the four areas of the county – Wexford, Enniscorthy, Gorey and New Ross.

Social Inclusion programmes aim to work with the most marginalised communities and individuals, including:

  • Long-term unemployed (> 1 year)
  • Disadvantaged communities
  • Disadvantaged women
  • People with disabilities
  • Disadvantaged young people
  • Parents/guardians/carers of young people at risk
  • Early school leavers and potential early school leavers/young people at risk of underachieving
  • Young people with behavior/learning difficulties (resulting from social factors)
  • Lone parents
  • Travellers
  • Older people
  • Substance misusers
  • Ex-prisoners
  • Offenders
  • Short-term unemployed (< 1 year)
  • Low income smallholders
  • Underemployed/seasonal workers
  • Low income families/people with inadequate incomes
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people
  • Homeless people
  • Asylum-seekers, refugees and migrant workers

Rural Development programmes also target many of the groups listed above, but in addition aim to improve the quality of life in rural areas by supporting community groups and new and developing businesses. The focus of this work is to promote economic activity, job creation, generation of additional and alternative incomes in rural areas and implement innovative approaches to rural development at local level.
