Who are we?
The Rural Roadrunner is the local name for the Rural Transport Progamme operated by Wexford Local Development. The Rural Transport Programme was set up to address the need for more public transport in rural areas. This includes:
The Programme began as a pilot project in 2003. There are now 37 groups throughout Ireland. In County Wexford, there are two companies operating the rural transport programme The Rural Bus and the Rural Roadrunner and we work together to ensure countywide coverage.
What we do?
The Rural Roadrunner operates several different types of services. They can be daily, weekly or fortnightly. Our services are open to everyone and we offer a door-to-door service where possible.
At present, all of our services are sub-contracted to provide operators. Several routes have buses that are fully accessible with wheelchair access. Some services have a Passenger Assistant who has been trained to help people on and off the bus. All the buses that we use must comply with best practice safety standards and all are fitted with safety belts. Bus Drivers have received specialised training in the provision of Community Transport and in Manual Handling, Assisting Passengers and First Aid.
How we came about?
The Rural Roadrunner commenced operations in 2003 as part of a pilot project known as The Rural Transport Initiative. Since its inception, the service has grown from strength to strength delivering 3,000 passenger journeys in 2003 to almost 40,000 passenger journeys in 2009. The Rural Roadrunner operates 18 routes throughout its designated area. The success of the programme is due to many factors, the strong community involvement working at ground level and the hard work of community representatives at Committee and Board levels, the relationships we have built up with statutory agencies and other stakeholders including the bus operators.
Our Mission Statement:
“The Rural Roadrunner is committed to deliver through united local action, an innovative demand responsive, community based transport service which links people with local services and facilities. Striving to be eco friendly it is aimed at meeting the needs of those geographically isolated and mobility impaired thus sustaining both rural communities and the environment”.
